1. More Than A Lawyer. Being a General Counsel means I’m more than a lawyer. I’m a strategic partner with useful advice in many situations, including the most sexy ones - fundraising, IPO, or acquisition.
2. Better In Than Out. An in-house counsel will always be more effective than outside counsel at advice. I’m in the room, in the trench with you. I have all the information (hopefully!) to know what to do and how to do it, because I know the organization and the people who make it up. “Oh, we need Steve on this. I’ll call him.”
3. The Closer To Ideation, The Better The Advice. Asking counsel to review something just before it goes out is often far too late. Better to bring me in as early as possible so I can help smooth out problems before they arise. Do you like rewriting a project on eve of delivery because of a legal issue you couldn’t have known about?
4. Don’t Know What You Don’t Know. Businesses can’t know what legal implications they don't know. Businesses know about their products and their customers, but don’t always know what legal issues can be triggered. That’s why I’m there.
The role of a GC is about balancing the smallest detail with the biggest picture, beyond boring paperwork and victory champagne. We’re removers of obstacles and the voice of the consumer in many cases.
I genuinely care about the companies I work for and look forward to their growth.
Are you ready for a GC?
